5S as a Lean Tool for Improvement

5S was first thought to be utilized by Toyota in the 1970s, however, some believe the method is even older than that. An Internet company called Quality Assurance Solutions reveals that the history of 5S goes back as far as the 16th Century and Venice shipbuilders. In an effort to streamline the assembly process, workers used quality process production to build ships in hours instead of days or weeks. From there, it was Sakichi Toyoda and son Kiichiro as well as Toyota engineer Taiichi Ohno who developed the 5S methodology or what they called the Total Production System of TPS after World War II.
In its drive to be globally competitive, the Venvi Group of Companies, through the Quality Assurance Center (QAC) has started to adopt the 5S practice. 5S is an acronym made of five Japanese words, namely seiri (sort); seiton (systematize); seiso (sweep); seiketsu (sanitize); and shitsuke (self-discipline).

At the start of 2017, QAC has adopted a program wherein business units compete against each other in accordance with the 5S guidelines on quarterly basis.
A judging committee is formed with representatives from each department to who are tasked to fairly audit and monitor each competing office. The criteria and guidelines has been formulated by the Quality Systems and Control Manager- Mrs. Cherry Marjorie Paz.

To date, winners of the said program are as follows: The first quarter was won by UNIT 102 (Quality Assurance Center, Marketing & Human Resources); while Venvi Realty Services and Utilities Office (VRSUO) was able to achieve 1st place in the second quarter; in the third quarter, the title returned to UNIT 102 (Quality Assurance Center, Marketing & Human Resources). On the fourth quarter, the Inter-Office Competition will be judged by outsourced juries. Ruling of scores will go back to zero. The winner of the last quarter will be declared as the overall champion receiving a cash prize, consolation prizes will also be rewarded respectively. Other business units will be included next year, 2018, such as Venvi Agro, VVH Construction, Prudence Development and Management Corporation, Venvi Corporation, Filharvest Manufacturing, Inc. and even the Venvi Head Office.
